Haiti appeal

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Mandy Hilger and I am the Director of Discipleship Ministries at Living Lord. In addition to working for Living Lord, I have a passion for serving the Haitian people and have been traveling to Haiti for about four years. I have been working with an orphanage, House of Hope. The administrators, Carl and Carole Vorst live in St. Ann, Missouri. A number of our sisters and brothers from Hope Lutheran, Good Shepherd Lutheran, Joy Community, and Trinity have traveled with me to Haiti and are connected to House of Hope in significant ways.

In the news you may have heard about the struggles that the Haitians are having with escalating food prices as well as with not having enough food. I have recently discovered that people in the neighborhood where the orphanage is located, are starving…they simply can not afford to eat. These are people that I attend church with while I am in Haiti.

I am writing you to see if anyone has any resources financial or other wise and can aid in this crisis. I know that I can give up a soda, desert, or a specialty coffee.

For as little as 53 cents a meal, consisting of rice and beans and a little oil, can fill the stomach of some one who is hungry. A large bag of rice costs $43.00, a large bag of beans costs is $60-$70 and $10.00 buys a gallon of oil. I am getting ready to go on vacation…and my heart has become troubled about my brothers and sisters in Haiti…I know I can help. Can you?

Please email me and let us pray for God to intervene and bring forth resources to help our brothers and sisters in Haiti.

Thank you.  May God bless you and keep you in the palm of His hand.

Mandy

ELCROS Visitors

From Kathie Walter
Co-Chair of Central States Synod Companion Synod Team

Bishop August Kruse (ELCROS- Evangelical Lutheran Church of Russia and Other Russian States) and Pastor Manfred Brockmann will be guests at the Central States Synod Assembly in St. Louis, June 5-8, 2008. They will arrive in Chicago on Monday, June 2. After meeting with ELCA Global Mission people on June 3, they will then fly to St. Louis on Wednesday, June 4. We are in need of someone meeting them at the airport (United flight #763, arriving St. Louis at 3:57pm) and transporting them to the Renaissance Hotel where they will be staying.

The two visitors will be available Wednesday evening if there is a group or some individuals that would like to take them to dinner and have conversation with them. They would also be available during the day on Thursday, June 6, if again a group would like to meet with them or someone would be willing to show them the sights of St. Louis. This is Bishop Kruse’s first visit to the United States, and he does not speak English but Pastor Brockmann will serve as a translator. We would like for him to experience as many different opportunities as possible during his visit here. Any help you can give us would be greatly appreciated.

If you're interested and can help, please email Terry Moore or call 314.456.6636.

Community Garden Accepting Plot Applications

Peace Community Garden is now accepting applications from area residents who would like individual plots. Plots measure 6 x 10 feet, and are available for $15 for the 2008 growing season. Some seeds and plants will be available to gardeners.

Gardeners are encouraged to share their excess produce with neighbors or one of the area food pantries.  Last year, the garden produced in excess of 700 lbs. of vegetables.

If an individual does not want the responsibility of maintaining an individual plot, but would still like to get involved, we will be planting some vegetables in common areas. These will be cared for communally.

For an application or more information, contact Garden Director Diane Runyan.

1209 Royal Heights Road

Bread for the World 2008 Offering of Letters

U.S. Senator Paul Simon, former neighbor and fellow-Lutheran, used to say, “One letter to a member of Congress on a hunger issue saves a life.”

Many congregations take part in the annual Offering of Letters sponsored by Bread for the World. Church members are encouraged to write letters to their legislators in Washington offering encouragement for the support of national and world causes dear to the hearts of Christians.

This year’s goal is the reduction of world hunger and poverty. The letter-writing project has already produced notable success, but needs to be vigorously pursued by many.

It is not difficult to conduct an Offering of Letters. Bread for the World offers step-by-step directions, videos, sample letters – everything to get started. You can obtain free materials by calling BFW 1-800-82BREAD (Washington office) or 1-800-447-OBFW (Chicago office).

I will be happy to meet with any group at your church interested in promoting the reduction of hunger and poverty goal. Call me at 314-727-2740 or email akboehmke@sbcglobal.net.

Congress digs into budget matters in the early autumn, so the best time to write letters is from July through early September. Easter is the time to get the Offering of Letters in motion at the local level.
